For over 34 years, Bhavani Kakani brings a unique combination of healthy compassion, strong commitment, sharp business acumen and servant leadership skills to empower people and organizations in Huntsville, Alabama. Along with other honors and recognitions, she is a recipient of the Girl's Inc. "She Knows Where She is Going" (2004) award, National Conference for Community and Justice's "Brotherhood and Sisterhood" (2005) award, Arthritis Foundations â€śHumanitarianâ€ť award (2007) and Women Honoring Womenâ€™s Health and Human Services award (2008).
Her vision for "building bridges" lead her to be the Founder and President of AshaKiran, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educate, empathize, and empower foreign origin persons (currently, South Asians) that are experiencing "crisis" situations. She is also a founding director and Secretary of the Board for the Progress Bank and Trust. Her previous work experience includes being as a Senior Staff Supervisor in International Finance for Intergraph Corporation, a Cytologist, and an Office Manager for a physician office.
As a trailblazer in building healthier communities, Mrs. Kakani educated, raised funds and advocated for better health for all persons by providing leadership for Madison County Medical Alliance (President), Alliance to the Medical Society of the State of Alabama (President), Southern Medical Association Alliance, Alliance to the American Medical Association and Hospice. Mrs. Kakani continues her volunteer activities by serving on the Healthcare Authority of the City of Huntsville Board, Huntsville Hospital Foundation, Alabama Council of Hospital Trustees, and The Statewide Health Planning Council
To solidify her commitment to empower abused children and their families, Mrs. Kakani presented education materials for Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, to schools to encourage them to find their voice in order to receive assistance. She also served on The National Children's' Advocacy Center in various capacities for many years, including two years as Board Chairperson.
Her belief in providing a second chance through education and mentoring to increase self worth and to excel the careers of less fortunate is demonstrated through mentoring for Womenâ€™s Economic Development Council Foundation for more than six years and is on UAH Foundation Board and Alabama Space Education Commission. She was an active participant on Randolph School, Womenâ€™s Business Center of North Alabama and Womenâ€™s Economic Development Council Foundation Boards.
Her dedication for community inclusiveness and betterment is displayed through her leadership as a Board Chair of Leadership of Huntsville/Madison County and service on the Boards of Botanical Garden, Huntsville India Association, Huntsville Telugu Association (Founder and Initial President), Women's Guild of the Huntsville Museum of Art (President), The Arts Council, The Huntsville International Society (Founding Member), Chaired United Way Professional Division Campaign, as member of Committee of 100, and as Co-Chair of Legacy for Huntsville Bicentennial Celebration Committee.
Mrs. Kakani earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Suma cum Laude and a Master of Administrative Science in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She has been married for 44 years to Dr. Rao Kakani, General and Vascular Surgeon, and the couple has three children and two grand children.
