Basics of Interpreting

This course is a free program designed for fully fluent bilingual or multilingual individuals who want to become professional interpreters in Alabama and help survivors of trauma, for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

Sessions will teach interpreter ethics, modes and types of interpreting, memorization and notetaking skills, and working as an interpreter in community, legal, and medical settings.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a beginning course for bilingual individuals who have not participated in any interpreter training before. If you are a professional interpreter with training or certification, you should apply for our “Advanced Trauma-Informed Interpreter Training.”

Participants in the program must meet the following requirements:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Fully bilingual in English and one or more languages
  • Must pass a language proficiency test in your secondary language. AshaKiran can arrange for a test for participants in our training. Results must be submitted to AshaKiran before you begin the program.
